Lisa's Bathroom Shelf

To continue in our series of peeks into our teams bathroom cupboards:

This month:  What Lisa uses in her day to day routine!

I've always had a combination skin, although it's definitely not as oily in my t-zone as it used to be - the joys of aging! I've always suffered with dehydrated skin, and once I hit late 20's, pigmentation.

In the morning I cleanse with NeoStrata Clarifying cleanser, and I use a homemade balm cleanser at night.

After cleansing I use Skinceuticals Vitamin C serum, Phloretin CF. I have been using a Vitamin C serum for 15 years now and it's made a huge difference to my pigmentation and gives my skin a real glow. I would never not use it now.

After waiting a few minutes for the Vitamin C Serum to sink in, and drag the kids out of bed in the meantime ...., I then apply Skinceuticals H.A. Intensifier for hydration and firming and plumping, and finish my morning routine with NeoStrata Ultra Daytime Smoothing Cream with an SPF 20. The glycolic in the cream exfoliates, helps my congested areas and also helps with anti-aging.

Both morning and night I apply NeoStrata Intensive Eye Therapy around my eyes. I love this product! It's great for hydration but also contains peptides and very powerful antioxidants to help trigger and reinforce collagen.

In the evening, after cleansing with the homemade balm, a very gentle cleanser that melts on the skin,  I switch between NeoStrata renewal cream and their Dermal Replenishment. Both focus on antioxidants, plumping and hydrating, but the renewal also contains pro-retinal, so is more active.

Top tip

Always apply your products in thin layers, rather than one thick layer.  The skin can only absorb so much product at one time. You are much better putting one layer, and then 30 minutes later, applying a second layer. It will really help with dehydration.

Jurgita's Bathroom Shelf

Summer holidays is but a distant memory,  but even so,  getting back into the swing of things back in London takes some time!  Back to work, back to school, back to routine!!!  We understand how our skincare routines can slip while we are on holidays, so we are here to give you some inspiration and motivation to get back on track.  Following on from where we left off, the Fern Team are here to share with you what is on our bathroom shelves and what our daily skin care routines are.

What is on Jurgita's bathroom Shelf?

"My moto is quick, easy and practical. I like to spend max 5 min for my morning routine.
My skin is combination, where the T zone gets oily and congested, however the skin over my cheek bones is dry and the very top of my cheeks can get red on a hot summers day or chilly winter morning.

My morning routine is always the same:
Glo Theraputics Hydrating gel cleanser, Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic, Glo Theraputics Moisturising Tint SPF 30 on top.

My favourite product is Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic. I could not live without it. It brightens up my skin and gives a natural glow, protects the skin from premature ageing.

My evening routine:
Same cleanser followed by Glo Theraputics Brightening polish (twice a week) and Skin Ceuticals Phyto Corrective Serum. I do not like putting too much on my skin at night, so I use serums only.  Phyto corrective really helps to reduce the redness as well as hydrates my skin.

Once or twice a week I will spoil myself with a Restorative mask – and leave it a bit longer than 15 min".

One Skin Does Not Fit All - Skin Conditions

Hello everyone,

One of the last blogs was all about Skin Types - this month I will explain Skin Conditions:

A Skin Type and a Skin Condition need seperate care.  With a Skin Type we can control the 'problem', eg, with a Skin Type that is Dry, we can recreate a lipid barrier on the skin to protect it and prevent further drying by using correct products. A Skin Type can be controlled but not cured as it is something we are born with.

A Skin Condition, on the other hand, can be treated as they have been caused by external factors and some internal factors. This can include dehydration which may have been caused by central heating, or not drinking enough water.

Skin Conditions include:

Dehydration – lack of water in the skin, possibly flaky, very fine lines, loss of ‘bounce’ to the skin, tight surface, dull complexion, oilness and blockages can still be present. We would recommend some regular light exfoliation and a serum with Hyaluronic Acid to help bind water into the skin.

Sensitised – reactivity to certain products/treatments/environmental factors, tendancy to redness, inflammation, reaction to heat and friction.  We would recommend soothing and calming products such as SkinCeuticals Redness Relief to help combat the triggers of redness and irritation.

Ageing/Premature – wrinkles, loss of muscle tone, pigmentation, dull, low in oil, course skin texture. Peels containing Glycolic and Lactic Acid are fantastic for treating Ageing and Premature Ageing skin conditions. Also use of products at home that contain Vitamin C, Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid and Retinol.

Pigmentation/Sunspots – brown or white irregular patches on the skin. A course of Alma Light Therapy to diminish the brown pigmentation patches, along side regular exfoliation, use of a Vitamin C serum and of course a high factor SPF is essential!

Congestion/Breakouts – under surface congestion, comodones (blackheads), milea (whiteheads), possible pustular breakouts. Build up of skin cells can cause a build up of blackheads which in turn can lead to breakouts. Regular exfoliation is a must alongside regular facials to have your blackheads removed.

So regular facials and a good home skincare routine are essential for your skins health.  Book in for a Fern Facial and we can determine your skin type, any skin conditions and a home skin care regime.

Nicki's bathroom shelf!

We have a lot of our clients who come in for facials asking what we use on our skin. So over the next several blogs I will be sharing with you that very information and a few secret skin care tips .....

So this month:  What Nicki uses!

My Skin Type is Dry and my Skin Condition can often be sensitive and prone to irritation. I also get the odd hormonal breakout and because of my Dry Skin Type, premature ageing is my main concern.

In the morning, I cleanse my skin with Glo-Therapeutics Gentle Cream Cleanser for sensitive skin.
I follow this up with NeoStrata Skin Active Anti-Oxidant Defence Serum all over my face and neck. I find that Vitamin C Products are too active for my skin, and this contains Chardonnay Grape Seed Extract as well as Green Tea Extract which really reduces the look of inflammation. My new hero product is the NeoStrata Skin Active Triple Firming Neck Cream - the triple being plumping, volume building and firmness!  And lastly I am currently using Glo-Therapeutics Moisturising Tint SPF30 in Medium.

In the evening, I cleanse my skin with the Gentle Cream Cleanser again, and I follow this up with Skin Ceuticals Resveratrol B E Serum. This is an anti-oxidant serum to reduce the free-radical damage that may have happened during the day and prevent collagen breakdown. I only use an eye cream at night, purely as I have more time, and my favourite at the moment is  Skin Ceuticals Eye Balm, a rich hydrating cream and I just love the texture of this product. I follow this with the Restorative Cream from Glo-Therapeutics which deeply nourishes and moisturises my dry skin, as well as being anti-inflammatory.

Once a week I will very lightly exfoliate with Glo-Therapeutics Refresh Facial Polish. This one does not stress my skin, I love the peppermint smell and its very refreshing. I am also using the Skin Ceuticals Phyto-Corrective Mask. This mask is highly moisturising and hydrating and so soothing and calming. I actually leave this mask in the fridge, then  massage it into my skin and leave it on overnight!

Nicki's Top Tip!

Lots of my clients often tell me they forget or struggle to find the time to exfoliate. I am a stickler for the correct exfoliation, and I suggest to keep it in the shower and exfoliate when you have your conditioner in your hair!

One Skin Does Not Fit All - Skin Types

Hello Everyone,

Skin Knowledge
As Esthetician's, it is our job to use our knowledge of the skins functions to help guide you on how to best look after your skin, by recommending the right product usage to establish what is the best skincare regime for you. When doing this we always recommend coming to see us for a Fern Facial, this is the time we take off all of your makeup, and have a good look at every inch of your skin under the bright light.  Scary, I know, but necessary!

Skin Type/Skin Conditions
Whilst we are analysing your skin, we are looking to determine two things - Skin Type and Skin Condition.  These are both very different things and over the next 2 blogs I am going to explain what they are, starting today with Skin Types.

The Four Skin Types
Your Skin Type is genetically pre-disposed (something you are born with) A Skin Type falls into 4 basic categories - Normal, Oily, Dry and Combination.  I am also going to add in Sensitive, as for some people this can be a permanent  skin condition.  So what do the different skin types look like?

Normal - very rarely do we find "normal" skin type, a bit like hunting for a four leaf clover! For those lucky few the T-zone (forehead, chin and nose) may be a bit oily, but overall sebum and moisture is balanced and the skin is neither too oily nor too dry.

Normal Skin has:

* fine pores
* good blood circulation
* a velvety, soft and smooth texture
* a fresh, rosy colour uniform transparency
* no blemishes

Oily - ‘Oily’ is used to describe a skin type with heightened sebum production.

Oily Skin has:

* a glossy shine
* thicker, pale skin: blood vessels may not be visible
* enlarged, clearly visible pores

Dry -  Dry skin can feel tight, brittle, rough and look dull. Skin elasticity is also low.

Dry Skin has:
* a rough and blotchy appearance (sometimes it appears to be prematurely aged)
* a feeling of tightness
* possible itchiness
* mild scaling or flakiness in patches

Combination - In combination skin the skin types vary in the T-zone and the cheeks.  For example, and oily t-zone and normal/dry cheeks.

Combination Skin has:
* enlarged pores in this area perhaps with some impurities
* normal to dry cheeks
* an oily T-zone (forehead, chin and nose)

Sensitive - is skin that is easily irritated and is more reactive than normal skin.

Sensitive Skin can have:
* Redness/visible capillaries
* Rash
* Swelling
* Itching sensation
* Burning sensation

So if you find yourself unsure of your skin type, the next step to take is booking in for a Fern facial and beginning your skin journey.

Men are from Mars.......

The structure and composition of men's skin is very different to a women's. Men's skin tends to be more oily, making it more susceptible to acne related problems, blemishes and blackheads.  But on a more positive note, men's skin is much thicker than women's, making it less susceptible to UV damage such as pigmentation and ageing from the sun. However, skin suffers daily from air pollution, sweat and grit and dirt getting into pores.

Another big challenge a man's facial skin has to cope with (unless he is a bearded gent of course...) is having to drag a razor over the face on a regular basis.  This in turn can strip away essential moisture and break down the skins natural protective barrier, making the skin very sensitive, red and irritated.

So with all of this in mind, Fernskinclinic have designed and added a facial specifically for men to the treatment menu:
The Men's Customized Facial Treatment.
A professional treatment with lots of good science built in. Only a trained therapist will be able to perform this and provide you with long lasting results.

This men's facial is a hard-working treatment whereby the complexion gets a welcome boost, whilst treating issues like acne, blackheads, skin redness or to just re-instate a youthful glow and relax. During the treatment the therapist will analyse your skin, decide what nourishment it needs and, using scientifically developed skin products, cleanse, exfoliate and nourish your skin.
You will have an enzyme mask combined with a steam treatment, extractions if necessary, a facial massage and a custom-made Alginate rubberising mask. Expect to leave with your skin feeling calm and clean.

Reclaim Your To-Do List

By now, with the kids well settled back into school, hopefully your to-do-lists have been significantly reduced.  Fernskinclinic have something extra to add to your list - YOU TIME!  And we can help you achieve this.

We have a number of things on our menu that will help you tick off some serious ME TIME.  But there are a couple of treatments we would like to draw your attention to:
Alma Laser Harmony XL has the technology to provide reliable, safe and effective results, for visibly dramatic improvements with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Alma Skin Tightening

Alma NIR module uses Near Infrared technology to heat the tissue under the skin's surface. This produces a comfortable deep dermal heating, without the damage to the epidermis. By creating this heating we are able to monitor the temperature on your skin in order to optimally increase both collagen and elastin production in the skin. You will immediately notice increased plumpness and tightening in your skin and over the course of the next few days, your skin will feel lifted. We often suggest taking before and after photos so you can see for yourself the improvement in your skin.
A course of four treatments, spaced two weeks apart, is recommended.  And the extra bonus?  This treatment is incredibly relaxing and painfree, with no down-time at all.  You can be rest assured you can do the school pick up looking glowing and non the worse for wear. What's not to love!

Alma Skin Rejuvenation

Using a low-energy, short-pulse broadband light, imperfections such as erythema of rosacea, photoaging and fine lines & wrinkles can be gently heated and eliminated, replaced by newer, younger looking skin. Each treatment is gentle with no downtime, just a gradual improvement in the skin's appearance.

Fashion Week Survival Tips!

Fashion Week is about to hit London with it a flurry of activity and events that will be 24/7.

So this week is not the time to be lazy in looking after your skin, especially when you want to look your tip-top best.  Here is some advice from us to keep your skin looking fresh, with those pushed for time in mind (even if your exhausted on the inside....... )

* Remove your make-up before you go to bed at night.  This is absolutely vital!  Your skin will collect dirt on top of the make-up you are wearing, and with touching your faces during the day, these will become one of the dirtiest parts of your bodies by the end of the day.  Yuck!  Oil and dirt provide the ideal conditions for acne causing bacteria.  So if you don't want to wake up with an extra blackhead or even worse a massive spot, cleanse and double cleanse!

* Moisturise.  Moisturisers on your skin evaporate during the day, leaving your skins parched.  If you want to wake up with fresher and hydrated skin (even if the odds are stacked against you...) moisturise after cleansing at night.  Simple!

*Repeat. When you wake up in the morning, repeat the above steps to prep your skin for the day ahead.  This will ensure makeup goes onto smooth and hydrated skin - you might even save yourself some time as you won't need to hide the fatigue under layers of makeup!

*Drink lots of water. Its a classic, but it really works at  keeping your skin hydrated from the inside out.  And not only that but drinking enough water throughout the day (and night) will keep your energy levels up, making you feel good and looking less fatigued.

And finally ... for that extra bit of a push, Rhian Stephenson - Nutritionist, Naturopath and CEO of Psycle,  recommends taking a Vitamin B Complex to reduce tiredness and Yeebe Mate Tea, which enhances your physical endurance and the ability to focus.

So with all of this ammunition you should be able to push through the week without hitting the brick wall too hard ........

And if your skin needs that extra helping hand, Fernskinclinic are providing daily complimentary treatments during London Fashion Week @ The Grooming Room, Century Club.

Banish the breakouts after exercising ...

We get many clients coming to us saying they seem to be breaking out in particular after exercising.  This can be frustrating as exercise plays a vital role in overall health and wellbeing, but sometimes your skin does not seem to be cooperating.  Breaking out after exercising is caused mostly by external factors, so here are some tips to keep those breakouts at bay;

1. Always take your makeup off before exercise - wearing your makeup while you workout and sweat will lead to clogged pores, which can then lead to breakouts.  Cleanse your skin before exercise thoroughly and pat dry.  Glo-Theraputics Purifying Gel-Cleanser, containing Salicylic Acid, which deeply cleanses the pores, perfect for pre and post workout.

2. Wash your hands before and after working out.   Avoid touching your face during exercise, especially after handling all of the gym equipment.  Use a clean towel to wipe away any sweat as you go.

3. After your workout, shower as soon as possible.   Not only do you want to avoid getting breakouts on your face, but in other areas like your back also.  The act of sweating unclogs pores, but once the sweat evaporates it leaves behind a salty residue, resulting in pores getting clogged back up again.  Exercise also boosts cell renewal, which is great, unless those dead skin cells are not promptly washed off.

4.  Hydrate your skin using a lightweight, anti-inflammatory moisturiser. Our skins accumulate toxins and grime throughout the day which can lead to inflammation. Exercise can actually help flush out these toxins via increased oxygen to our blood vessels. After exercise and cleansing try using Glo-theraputics Pure Hydration - containing anti-inflammatory fruit extracts.

5. And finally, exfoliate regularly. Ridding your skin of excess dead-skin build up will help enormously to avoid post-workout breakouts.  Try using Glo-Theraputics Refresh Facial Polish  2-3 times weekly to gently polish away those dead skin cells.

We hope these tips help - happy breakout-free exercising!!!!

Get Glowing From The Inside

For this weeks blog, I have Nutritional Therapist Emma Olliff giving us some healthy eating tips and delicious smoothie recipe's to make your skin GLOW:

A healthy diet supports good health in countless ways, just as poor choices challenge us to maintain balance and wellbeing. Our skin, as our largest organ, reflects our state of health on the inside and can fluctuate just as our diets do. Increases in sugars (simple and complex), unhealthy fats, processed foods and artificial ingredients create acidity, inflammation and imbalance that effect our skin, hair, nails, and of course, the rest of our body and its “systems”.

Are there any foods that can actually help with acne?

A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants is your skins best friend. Eliminate processed and refined foods, and strive to eat foods that are minimally processed and come in a rainbow of colour. Switch from processed grain products to whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice. Increase your vegetable intake with extra emphasis on greens such as kale, broccoli, collard greens, watercress and sea vegetables that provide essential minerals and support nearly every bodily function. Strive to bring in non-animal sources of protein and healthy fats from legumes, nuts and seeds. Fill in with foods high in antioxidants such as berries and add some lemon or apple cider vinegar to your water to alkalinize and support overall health. The more you focus on bringing in the foods that serve you, the sooner the foods that don’t serve you will fall by the wayside, or will at least move to a healthier place in the mix.

When it comes to aging, any foods that speed up the process? Processed foods, sugar, artificial ingredients, partially hydrogenated oils and any foods that you can’t translate in your mind you’re likely not to be able to translate in your body either. These combined with a sedentary lifestyle can wreak havoc on your skin and your health.

How about foods that slow down the ageing process? Our food choices together with lifestyle can help slow the ageing process. Antioxidant rich foods that neutralise free radicals and the damage they do to cells and membranes are a great addition, as are super foods such as blueberries, broccoli, oats, quinoa, pumpkin seed, walnuts and more. Keep your food clean – minimally processed for maximum nutrition – and eat foods that come from the green kind of a plant as opposed to a processing plant. Combine a healthy diet with vitamin D from the sun, fresh air, clean water, ample sleep and exercise, and you’re apt to be feeling and looking younger in no time. If there was one food everyone should eat to make our skin look its best, what would it be? I always recommend that people start with greens! Many consider green to be the colour of healing, and it happens also to the colour most missing in the standard British diet. Dark leafy greens like kale, collard greens, cabbages, romaine lettuce, watercress, mustard greens, dandelion greens … provide a wealth of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that benefit everything including your liver and heart to your bones and eyes. Greens are known to reduce inflammation, and can even help reduce risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

The Vitamin A Rich Green Smoothie. A collagen protector that is tasty and beautifying! Serves: 2
Ingredients:
2 cups spinach
½ cucumber
1 small avocado
½ cup mango fruit or 1 orange (+ zest – makes it really orangey!)
1 lime
2 cups coconut water (or water) to cover
1 Tbsp chia seeds
1 Tbsp flax seeds (ground)
2 Tbsp pumpkin seeds
Method:
1. Put spinach into the blender first, followed by all the other ingredients.
2. Note: the orange zest is really worth adding – it creates a really zingy mango-orange flavour.
3. Blend everything for about 1-2 minutes until smooth
4. Drink!

Greenie genie: a juice to help acne or problem skin. Alkalising green juices are especially beneficial for improving acne. Go for ingredients such as asparagus, celery, parsley and watercress, and don't overload on high-fructose fruits. Carrot juice, rich in beta-carotene, is also a useful addition, but try to keep the juices mostly green. This is a deliciously light juice with a refreshing ginger tang. The grassiness of the green ingredients is slightly sweetened by the apples.
Makes one large glass:
2 medium apples
2 medium carrots
2cm (1in) cube ginger, unpeeled
4 small asparagus spears
small handful parsley
small handful freshly cut wheatgrass, or 1 level tsp of powdered greens, such as wheatgrass, chlorella or spirulina
Method:
Juice together all the ingredients, in their entirety, stirring in your chosen powdered greens (if using) just before serving.

Hydrate Yourself ...

Dehydration is when there is lack of water in the skin, indications can be itching, pulling and dull looking skin. Once the skin is dehydrated, it can no longer carry out its role as a barrier.  Skin is most susceptible to dehydration in the winter months and also in hotter climates.

Hydration, hydration, hydration......if your skin is dehydrated here is a couple of Fern Favourites to pull that water back into your skin...

Skin Ceuticals Hydrating B5
Contains high level of Hyaluronic Acid to bind moisture to the skin and increase hydration, also holding 100x its weight in
drenching your skin with much needed water.  And following on from the Protect Yourself blog, hydrating B5 is recommended to use along side Vitamin C serums as they enhance each other. Use daily to maximise the benefits of your daily moisturiser.

Hydrating B5 Mask
This highly concentrated mask infuses dehydrated skin with moisture, this weekly hydration products helps to maintain the water balance in your skin. Amazing for dehydrated, and stressed skin to aid the skin in restoring an healthy and radiant appearance.  And the bonus is that you don't have to wash it off!  Apply to skin at night, allow to penetrate for 10 minutes and then gently massage excess into skin.  Also fab for flights!  Its clear so no one will know you  have a mask on, and instead of washing it off, you lightly rub the excess in. Your skin will thank you for it!

As well as hydrating your skin from the outside, it is essential to hydrate your skin from the inside.
Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of WATER and spread them out over the course of the day.  Hydrated skin mean skin will look plumper and the signs of ageing are minimised.

So don't forget to hydrate yourself, inside and out.........

Power of Touch

The beauty industry is awash with all kinds of the latest machines promising to help with everything from sun damage to cellulite. And this is all exciting stuff – we at Fernskinclinic even have a couple of super power machines to help with a number of skin conditions.
But at the core of Fernskinclinic's ethos is the power of touch. Hands on skin. Back to basics skincare is being overlooked in favor of fast tracking skin care.

At Fernskinclinic, before we even go near anyone with a machine, we advise our clients to let us help them with making sure their skins needs are being met right from start. Cleansing through to hydrating and protection. As soon as we lay our hands on a clients skin it starts to give us a good idea of what their skin requires.

Stress and our busy lifestyles also contribute to the skins general well-being. The power of touch during a fern facial does wonders to calm and relax, to slow down. It's therapy for the soul and our skin – which is where we at Fernskinclinc feel is the very best place for skincare to begin.

Protect yourself...

The sun is one of the biggest factors in ageing and damage of our skin.  Lines and wrinkles, unsightly hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity and accelerated collagen breakdown.  Billions of pounds are spent on the latest beauty products - promising us plumping, brightening, hydrating, amongst many other things.

And that is all fantastic stuff!  But what is the point in applying all of these potions and lotions and then walking out into the Sun only to be exposed to damaging UVA and UVA light?

Protection, protection, protection  - this is where anti-ageing skin care must begin.  And this should come from a Vitamin C Serum in the form of L Asorbic Acid  and at least a SPF 30 or above.  Both applied each and every morning - like putting your armour on before leaving the house.

Fernskinclinic stocks both of the above products in various forms and strengths to suit your protection needs.
