Lisa's Bathroom Shelf

To continue in our series of peeks into our teams bathroom cupboards:

This month:  What Lisa uses in her day to day routine!

I've always had a combination skin, although it's definitely not as oily in my t-zone as it used to be - the joys of aging! I've always suffered with dehydrated skin, and once I hit late 20's, pigmentation.

In the morning I cleanse with NeoStrata Clarifying cleanser, and I use a homemade balm cleanser at night.

After cleansing I use Skinceuticals Vitamin C serum, Phloretin CF. I have been using a Vitamin C serum for 15 years now and it's made a huge difference to my pigmentation and gives my skin a real glow. I would never not use it now.

After waiting a few minutes for the Vitamin C Serum to sink in, and drag the kids out of bed in the meantime ...., I then apply Skinceuticals H.A. Intensifier for hydration and firming and plumping, and finish my morning routine with NeoStrata Ultra Daytime Smoothing Cream with an SPF 20. The glycolic in the cream exfoliates, helps my congested areas and also helps with anti-aging.

Both morning and night I apply NeoStrata Intensive Eye Therapy around my eyes. I love this product! It's great for hydration but also contains peptides and very powerful antioxidants to help trigger and reinforce collagen.

In the evening, after cleansing with the homemade balm, a very gentle cleanser that melts on the skin,  I switch between NeoStrata renewal cream and their Dermal Replenishment. Both focus on antioxidants, plumping and hydrating, but the renewal also contains pro-retinal, so is more active.

Top tip

Always apply your products in thin layers, rather than one thick layer.  The skin can only absorb so much product at one time. You are much better putting one layer, and then 30 minutes later, applying a second layer. It will really help with dehydration.

Jurgita's Bathroom Shelf

Summer holidays is but a distant memory,  but even so,  getting back into the swing of things back in London takes some time!  Back to work, back to school, back to routine!!!  We understand how our skincare routines can slip while we are on holidays, so we are here to give you some inspiration and motivation to get back on track.  Following on from where we left off, the Fern Team are here to share with you what is on our bathroom shelves and what our daily skin care routines are.

What is on Jurgita's bathroom Shelf?

"My moto is quick, easy and practical. I like to spend max 5 min for my morning routine.
My skin is combination, where the T zone gets oily and congested, however the skin over my cheek bones is dry and the very top of my cheeks can get red on a hot summers day or chilly winter morning.

My morning routine is always the same:
Glo Theraputics Hydrating gel cleanser, Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic, Glo Theraputics Moisturising Tint SPF 30 on top.

My favourite product is Skin Ceuticals CE Ferulic. I could not live without it. It brightens up my skin and gives a natural glow, protects the skin from premature ageing.

My evening routine:
Same cleanser followed by Glo Theraputics Brightening polish (twice a week) and Skin Ceuticals Phyto Corrective Serum. I do not like putting too much on my skin at night, so I use serums only.  Phyto corrective really helps to reduce the redness as well as hydrates my skin.

Once or twice a week I will spoil myself with a Restorative mask – and leave it a bit longer than 15 min".

Fashion Week Survival Tips!

Fashion Week is about to hit London with it a flurry of activity and events that will be 24/7.

So this week is not the time to be lazy in looking after your skin, especially when you want to look your tip-top best.  Here is some advice from us to keep your skin looking fresh, with those pushed for time in mind (even if your exhausted on the inside....... )

* Remove your make-up before you go to bed at night.  This is absolutely vital!  Your skin will collect dirt on top of the make-up you are wearing, and with touching your faces during the day, these will become one of the dirtiest parts of your bodies by the end of the day.  Yuck!  Oil and dirt provide the ideal conditions for acne causing bacteria.  So if you don't want to wake up with an extra blackhead or even worse a massive spot, cleanse and double cleanse!

* Moisturise.  Moisturisers on your skin evaporate during the day, leaving your skins parched.  If you want to wake up with fresher and hydrated skin (even if the odds are stacked against you...) moisturise after cleansing at night.  Simple!

*Repeat. When you wake up in the morning, repeat the above steps to prep your skin for the day ahead.  This will ensure makeup goes onto smooth and hydrated skin - you might even save yourself some time as you won't need to hide the fatigue under layers of makeup!

*Drink lots of water. Its a classic, but it really works at  keeping your skin hydrated from the inside out.  And not only that but drinking enough water throughout the day (and night) will keep your energy levels up, making you feel good and looking less fatigued.

And finally ... for that extra bit of a push, Rhian Stephenson - Nutritionist, Naturopath and CEO of Psycle,  recommends taking a Vitamin B Complex to reduce tiredness and Yeebe Mate Tea, which enhances your physical endurance and the ability to focus.

So with all of this ammunition you should be able to push through the week without hitting the brick wall too hard ........

And if your skin needs that extra helping hand, Fernskinclinic are providing daily complimentary treatments during London Fashion Week @ The Grooming Room, Century Club.

Banish the breakouts after exercising ...

We get many clients coming to us saying they seem to be breaking out in particular after exercising.  This can be frustrating as exercise plays a vital role in overall health and wellbeing, but sometimes your skin does not seem to be cooperating.  Breaking out after exercising is caused mostly by external factors, so here are some tips to keep those breakouts at bay;

1. Always take your makeup off before exercise - wearing your makeup while you workout and sweat will lead to clogged pores, which can then lead to breakouts.  Cleanse your skin before exercise thoroughly and pat dry.  Glo-Theraputics Purifying Gel-Cleanser, containing Salicylic Acid, which deeply cleanses the pores, perfect for pre and post workout.

2. Wash your hands before and after working out.   Avoid touching your face during exercise, especially after handling all of the gym equipment.  Use a clean towel to wipe away any sweat as you go.

3. After your workout, shower as soon as possible.   Not only do you want to avoid getting breakouts on your face, but in other areas like your back also.  The act of sweating unclogs pores, but once the sweat evaporates it leaves behind a salty residue, resulting in pores getting clogged back up again.  Exercise also boosts cell renewal, which is great, unless those dead skin cells are not promptly washed off.

4.  Hydrate your skin using a lightweight, anti-inflammatory moisturiser. Our skins accumulate toxins and grime throughout the day which can lead to inflammation. Exercise can actually help flush out these toxins via increased oxygen to our blood vessels. After exercise and cleansing try using Glo-theraputics Pure Hydration - containing anti-inflammatory fruit extracts.

5. And finally, exfoliate regularly. Ridding your skin of excess dead-skin build up will help enormously to avoid post-workout breakouts.  Try using Glo-Theraputics Refresh Facial Polish  2-3 times weekly to gently polish away those dead skin cells.

We hope these tips help - happy breakout-free exercising!!!!

How to combat late nights!

There is no way around it - December usually equals late nights, too much food and a few too many drinks! All great at the time, but we don't always love how we end up feeling (and sometimes looking) the next morning.

Our top tips for ensuring you remain radiant include making sure you are sufficiently hydrated and to remove your make-up before bed. Luke warm water with half a lemon squeezed into it in the evening and first thing in the morning will balance out your ph-levels and combat too much acidity in the stomach (just remember not to brush your teeth within half an hour after drinking in order to preserve your tooth enamel!).

And if the partying got the better of you, book in for a treatment and we will help to restore the glow to your skin!

New Year, New Cleansers

By: Diana Augustoni

It’s a new year and here at Fern we are making some changes.  We have always felt that it is the utmost importance to provide our clients with effective skincare.  We are very proud of the skincare options we offer for home use but have decided to change things around a bit.  We have always used Dermalogica skincare and will continue to carry the Ultra Calming Line but have decided to discontinue stock of their other cleansers.  Not to fret, you won’t be without great options!

We will continue to offer all of the cleanser options in the Alpha H range.  Both the Triple Action Cleanser and Balancing Cleanser will be available.  The Soothing and Calming Cleanser will be out of stock due to them reformulating that product.  As a result of that we have looked into our Skin Ceuticals range.

Skin Ceuticals, as many of you know, is an amazing anti-aging range and we have chosen their best cleansers to offer to you now.  We will be carrying the Foaming Cleanser, Gentle Cleanser and the Blemish + Age Cleansing Gel.

The Foaming Cleanser is a lightweight cleanser that deep cleans pores, removes excess oils and clears surface impurities.  A fragrance free cleanser containing gentle, non-allergenic ingredients to prevent irritation.  This cleanser contains extracts of Arnica, Ivy, Cucumber, Mallow, Lime Tree and Sambuccus (also known as Elder Extract). It’s mild and non-drying to the skin and perfect for removing make-up.  As in the name, this cleanser is a foaming cleanser that you will want to massage into skin thoroughly and then simply rinse off.  Those of you who liked the Special Cleansing Gel from Dermalogica will find this one a nice change.

The Gentle Cleanser is specifically designed for sensitive or dry skin.  This is a mild cleanser designed to remove excess impurities and oil without over drying. The Gentle Cleanser contains emollients and skin conditioners which calm and moisturise the skin.  Allantoin, a botanical extract with soothing properties believed to aid in fragile skin and Orange Oil known for its soothing properties.  You can simply massage this cleanser into the skin and rinse off with warm water or use a face cloth/muslin.  Many of you who like the Alpha H Soothing and Calming Cleansing Gel will like this one as an alternative or if you liked the Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution, we recommend trying this one.

The Blemish + Age Cleansing Gel is the newest cleanser to the Skin Ceuticals range.  This daily cleanser targets blemishes and photoaging.  This is an ideal cleanser for skin prone to breakouts and helps to address the concerns of aging skin as well.  This cleansing gel is non drying and has micro-exfoliating properties of  0.2% Capryloyl Salicylic Acid to decongest clogged pores, 0.2% Salicylic Acid to refine pores and reduce breakouts  and 3.5% Glycolic Acid to accelerate exfoliation, hydrate the skin and reduce the appearance of aging skin.  With this cleanser, you simply massage into the skin and rinse off with tepid water.  This cleanser is ideal for those of you who would choose Dermalogica’s  Dermal Clay Cleanser or the Skin Resurfacing Cleanser.
So there you have it, New Year, new cleansers!
